Robust Midsagittal Plane Extraction from Coarse, Pathological 3D Images

چکیده
This paper focuses on the evaluation of an ideal midsagittal plane (iMSP) extraction algorithm. The algorithm was developed for capturing the iMSP from 3D normal and pathological neural images. The main challenges are the drastic structural asymmetry that often exists in pathological brains, and the sparse, nonisotropic data sampling that is common in clinical practice. A simple edge-based, cross-correlation approach is presented that decomposes the iMSP extraction problem into discovery of symmetry axes from 2D slices, followed by robust estimation of 3D plane parameters. The algorithm's tolerance to brain asymmetries, input image o sets and image noise is quantitatively measured. It is found that the algorithm can extract the iMSP from input 3D images with (1) large asymmetrical lesions; (2) arbitrary initial yaw and roll angle errors; and (3) low signal-to-noise level. Also, no signi cant di erence is found between the iMSP computed by the algorithm and the midsagittal plane estimated by two trained neuroradiologists.

Automatic Bilateral Symmetry (Midsagittal) Plane Extraction from Pathological 3D Neuroradiological Images
Most pathologies (tumor, bleed, stroke) of the human brain can be determined by a symmetry-based analysis of neural scans showing the brain's 3D internal structure. Detecting departures of this internal structure from its normal bilateral symmetry can guide the classi cation of abnormalities. This process is facilitated by rst locating the ideal symmetry plane (midsagittal) with respect to whic...
متن کاملFast and Robust Mid-Sagittal Plane Location in 3D MR Images of the Brain
Extraction of the mid-sagittal plane (MSP) is an important step for brain image registration and asymmetry analysis. We present a fast MSP extraction method for 3D MR images, which is based on automatic segmentation of the brain and on heuristic maximization of cerebro-spinal fluid within the MSP. The method is shown to be robust to severe anatomical asymmetries between the hemispheres, caused ...
متن کاملAutomatic Extraction of the Central Symmetry (Mid-Sagittal) Plane from Neuroradiology Images
Normal human brains present an approximate bilateral symmetry. This symmetry is reflected in CT and MR images depicting axial and coronal slices of the brain. Though the internal structure of a pathologic brain may depart from its normal bilateral symmetry, the ideal imaginary bilateral symmetry plane remains invariant. This plane is often referred to as the mid-sagittal plane of the brain. Aut...
متن کاملFrom real-time MRI to 3d tongue movements
Real-time Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) at 9 images/s of the midsagittal plane is used as input to a threedimensional tongue model, previously generated based on sustained articulations imaged with static MRI. The aim is two-fold, firstly to use articulatory inversion to extrapolate the midsagittal tongue movements to three-dimensional movements, secondly to determine the accuracy of the ton...
متن کاملFaster 3d vocal tract real-time MRI using constrained reconstruction
Real-time magnetic resonance imaging (rtMRI) is a valuable emerging tool for studying the dynamics of vocal production. Conventional 2D rtMRI typically images the midsagittal plane of the vocal tract, acquiring data from all the important articulators. Dynamic 3D MRI would be a major advance, as it would provide 3D visualization of the vocal tract shaping dynamics, especially for the modeling o...
